Reupholstered the Miata’s passenger seat last night with tons of help from my girlfriend. Even with the both of us working on us it took four hours for the one seat, though about two hours of that consisted of taking the seat out of the car, discovering I don’t have the right dykes to cut hog rings off, going to Lowe’s, and then coming back. I got !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for $155 and I’m honestly really impressed. The fake leather is extremely soft (gonna do some nekkid driving because window tint) and the fitment is acceptable. The instructions they email you are a joke, however. Anyways, some pictures.

The autozone seat cover I had previously covering the seat so that water from the leaky top didn’t get into the foam:

Tomorrow I hope to tackle the other one, and put on a new steering knuckle/spindle. Because bent.

Yikes! I can’t believe that the Tie Rod isn’t taco shaped.

I’ve considered doing it on the z but I’ve read bad things about the kit for it. It’s that or get some retro race seats.

Not bad. If it’s good vinyl it’ll last a long time. At my shop we’d charge $600 for vinyl and $7-800 for genuine leather. If you still have wrinkles after a few weeks, let it idle with the heat on full blast for about 20 minutes. That should knock the wrinkles out.

I’m looking at pictures online and that actually seems to be the way that’s supposed to be shaped, which means I still have no idea what part of my suspension is broke and I’m fucked. Yay.

That is definitely odd!

That Autozone cover is truly loathsome. Nice upgrade.

This is from the classics division of the company I work for . Check it out. May be worth a look Since Classic Datsun Motorsport sells them.

Looks good. Is the top less leaky now?

They came on my Civic when I got it, so I had them lying around. They did their job of collecting rainwater in easy-to-soak-up puddles instead of soaking into the seats themselves but I am unimaginably glad they’re gone.

HAHAHAHAHA

No.

Though I do have a top sitting in its box ready to be installed that’s made by the same company, and if it’s anywhere near the quality of their seat cover I am in good hands.

please burn that red and black seat cover to appease the gods. Also those new covers look really good. Not sure if I want to go from leather to vinyl though.

Any advice to get imprints out? Someone left a dasani bottle on my MDX’s seat, and now it has the bottom of the bottles shape imprinted into the leather seat bottom. It’s sat outside in the summer, and I’ve driven with the heat on for longer than 20 mins, and it’s still there.

Steam. For vinyl heat is good enough but leather often needs some moisture. The guys in the back use Jiffy Garment Steamers to remove wrinkles. An iron will damage it but if you have access to a steamer go for it.

Next time, leave the door on, and just put the top back and pull the seat out that way. This method should take less than 2 hours.

I am considering buying those seat covers after seeing this post and looked up wrinkle removal.

pretty dramatic effects. From what I have gathered one needs:
1. a old blue sweatshirt
2.heat gun or hair dryer
3. two hands to sensually massage the upholstery
4. collection of icons and voodoo charms to hang from rear view mirror to satisfy the tempestuous gods of interiors.
